Sonia in memoriam

Exactly three years ago I decided to finally buy myself an own horse after dreaming about it since a small girl. My dream came true as I traveled with Nigel to Maharasthra, to the horse fair in Sholapur in October 2009 and found a Marwari mare that I liked. Sonia traveled over 24 hours in our pick-up to reach her new home in the Nilgiris.

A foreigner women buying a horse in this world of only men, received quite a lot of attention and made us special guests with all the required ceremonies...

The first thing that Sonia had to learn in her new home was grazing. She seemed little lost in the pasture and would follow me back to the gate and just stand there. We had to walk her further away and sit down next to her so that she dared to start grazing.

Emma liked to ride Sonia, too. Sometimes I would put both the girls on Sonia and take them down to my riding ring with their dolls and picnic food in their bags. Girls would play on the side of the riding ring while I rode and then they would ride back to the stables.

We always had many dogs as our company when we went to ride across the fields, in the foothills of the Nilgiris Bluemountains.

We came home on Friday evening at 10 o'clock and found Sonia in great pain. She had had diarrhea a day before and had not eaten that day. We battled for four hours with her, doing everything we could but Sonia did not respond to the treatment. At 3:10 am she died and was buried the next day just 10 meters away from where she lay down the last time. The full Hill View Farm felt the shock and the loss.
